United Airlines said Monday that Brett Hart, the airline’s executive vice president and chief administrative officer, has been promoted to president. He will take over his new role on May 20.

Hart will replace Scott Kirby, who is taking over as CEO after the company’s annual meeting on May 20, as was previously announced. CEO Oscar Munoz will transition to executive chair.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic that has devastated the airline industry, Hart will forgo his salary as president, as Munoz and Kirby have agreed to also.

“The path forward will not be easy, but I am confident that Scott and I will continue our partnership to lead United through the extraordinary challenge posed by Covid-19,” Hart said in a news release.

After joining United (NASDAQ: UAL) in 2010, Hart took on some important strategic responsibilities, including serving as the intern CEO for six months while Munoz recovered from a heart transplant in 2015.

In this new role, Hart will continue spearheading United’s public advocacy strategy — including the Government Affairs, Corporate Communications, Legal and Community Engagement teams.

“Brett is a well-established and widely respected leader who has established a strong track record, over the last decade, helping United navigate complex challenges across all areas of our business,” Munoz said in a news release. “He is recognized inside and outside of the airline industry for his leadership and has played a central role in shaping our strategy, culture and leading our community engagement around the world.”

The company will not replace the role of Chief Administrative Officer.
